The best parking spots in Syracuse, Sicily

Syracuse is known for its ancient Greek ruins, such as the Teatro Greco, beautiful beaches and the small island of Ortigia. Many visitors worldwide come to Syracuse to stroll the archaeological park and see the Cathedral of Syracuse.

Driving is a great option to see all of these monuments. It provides comfort and the ability to travel at your own speed. However, parking and navigating the city centre can be tricky. Especially for those who are not used to the Italian way of driving and parking. Many of the streets are narrow and the historic centre’s layout wasn’t designed for modern traffic. Some places even have Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL), which restricts access for non-residents. Parking therefore is even more limited. And, in the summer it can get overwhelming with the surge of visitors to the island.

One of the best parking options for accessing the city centre is at the entrance of the historic centre. The largest parking lot is the Molo Sant’Antonio Parking. It’s on Via Bengasi and Via Rodi. It’s only a 5-minute walk from Ortigia, making it a convenient choice.

Where to find free parking in Syracuse

Finding free parking Syracuse, near Ortigia is challenging. As mentioned before, near the entrance of the town there are some parking options available. However, most of these are paid (usually around €1/hour). If you want free parking options, your best bet is to cruise the streets of Viale Teocrito and areas near the Piazza Adda. They are both close to the historic centre but require a brief walk. You can also check the area near Via Malta (near the bridge which connects Ortigia to the mainland of Sicily).

We must make it clear that finding free parking, especially in the high tourist season, is difficult. So make sure to arrive early to have a better chance of finding a spot.

Important tips to keep in mind

  • Watch out for unmarked Free Zones: Free parking areas are usually unmarked. However, some streets have restrictions that are not so obvious, especially for non-Italian speakers. Always check the signage carefully.
  • Local regulations: Keep in mind market days and street closures. This will especially happen in busy areas like Piazza Adda, which have special parking rules on certain days of the week.
  • ZTL areas: Avoid parking within this area, especially in Ortigia, because unauthorized vehicles can receive heavy fines. These zones are marked with signs but can be confusing for first-time visitors.

Our recommended parking areas in Syracuse’s historical centre

In our opinion, the best way to avoid stress and fines is to leave your car in paid parking. Although it is more expensive, you are guaranteed convenience and assurance that you’re not parked in an illegal zone.

Paid Parking Lots

Even though there are a few options for paid parking lots in Syracuse, they are not as abundant. Keep in mind, that this is a historic area and everything is built around centuries-old monuments. Some good options for a paid parking lot include:

Talete Parking Lot

Located right on the coast of Ortigia on Via Vittorio Veneto, the Talete Parking Lot is a popular choice for visitors. It’s only a 5-10 minute walk from Ortigia’s main area, including the Cathedral and the Temple of Apollo. There are many parking spots available and prices are affordable, however, there are many complaints about the pay areas not working properly, and difficulty to find staff, so please be patient.

Garage Ortigia

Found on Via Vittorio Veneto, Garage Ortigia is a paid parking lot that has better customer reviews. It’s in a very local area, in the heart of the historic centre and the staff working there is friendly and speaks English. But, we would like to clarify that this is a smaller parking, with narrow ramps and turns. If you are not comfortable navigating your car in tight spots, we don’t recommend parking here. It costs about €20 for a full day of parking.

Street parking recommendations

If you prefer street parking, streets around Via Malta and Corso Umberto I are good options to access the historic centre. These paid spots are usually marked by blue lines and will have parking meters nearby. Keep some coins handy for the parking meters, or alternatively, you can use apps like EasyPark to pay and track the meter. Remember that paid street parking usually has a maximum parking limit so it isn’t the best option for long stays.
