The best excursions in Sicily
Have you ever dreamed of exploring a land rich in history, breathtaking landscapes and unique adventures? Sicily awaits you with its natural and cultural wonders ready to be discovered. Whether you want to climb Mount Etna, immerse yourself in the cool waters of Cavagrande or stroll among ancient sites such as Pantalica, here you will find the perfect excursion. Here is a small list.
Cava Grande
The reserve is located between the municipalities of Noto, Avola and Syracuse. It is a complex of soft limestone rocks, located in the low Ibleo plateau carved by the river Cassibile, which through erosion have formed steep valleys called “caves”.
One of the most spectacular is the Cava Grande crossed by the river Cassibile.
Long 10 km and 250 meters deep, it was in the paleolithic era home to inhabited settlements and is considered the largest natural canyon in Europe.
Nature reserve, established by decree of 1984 and entrusted to the Forestry Company, includes a dense river and lake vegetation. With its approximately three thousand hectares, it attracts thousands of visitors every year. To admire the magnificent panorama from above, we recommend that you take the SS 115 towards Avola and follow the signs for Avola Antica: about one km from this site you will reach a viewpoint from which you can enjoy an enchanting view of the lakes at the bottom of the valley.
For the excursion in Sicily we suggest to bring a water reserve and comfortable trekking shoes. Especially in summer, on warmer days, we recommend to take the ascent back at sunset.
Necropolis of Pantalica
Pantalica is the largest cave necropolis in the Mediterranean. It is composed of thousands of graves (about 5000) dug by man divided into different areas dating back to different eras that we will talk more about later.
These tombs are located within a magical natural landscape full of valleys, plateaus and canyons. Magical places where nature is the master.
Precisely thanks to these settlements were dug in the rock, starting from the thirteenth century B.C. the wonderful tombs of various forms that, over time, have also become cave dwellings with adjacent Byzantine churches.
A sight to see.
The Roman columns of Marzamemi
In Marzamemi, in the province of Syracuse, a few meters deep, you can dive with tanks but also simply with mask and fins, on a load of large Roman columns of the third century A.D. There is a lot of water.
For diving enthusiasts, a must-see show.
Excursion to the magical Etna
Without a doubt, an excursion to Mount Etna is one of the most incredible nature experiences in all of Sicily. The highest active volcano in Europe stands with its 3300 meters high on the Sicilian panorama.
One can only begin with the summit craters. Three are included in virtually every tour. The central crater, which includes those known as Voragine and Bocca Nuova, the north-east crater and the south-east crater. With a walk that reaches over two thousand meters, you can take a look at these views.
The Valley of Bove is another one of the appointments not to be missed in your excursion on Mount Etna. It is a deep valley, surrounded by walls that reach up to 1000 meters, and extended up to seven kilometers.
A cuckoo that accompanies the path of those who venture into the eastern part of the island, between sea and inland Sicily.
Great charm also include the numerous caves formed inside the volcano.
Among the best known, that of the raspberries, the Palombe, the Frost and the Three Levels.
Canyons and tunnels can be visited thanks to the excursions organized by the various companies, which will provide you with all the equipment of true speleologists.
