Baroque cities guide in Sicily

The Baroque of the Val di Noto is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site-a true hymn to the art, architecture and strength of a land that rose again after the 1693 earthquake. This itinerary is perfect for those who love to immerse themselves in the history, culture and traditions of an authentic and vibrant Sicily.

The late baroque cities of Noted, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla e Ispica represent extraordinary examples of post-earthquake reconstruction, with historic centers that look like living sets.

A Noto you can admire the majestic Cathedral of San Nicolò, the refined Ducezio Palace and participate in the famous Infiorata, a spring event that transforms the streets into carpets of flowers.

Modica is famous for its Baroque churches and the famous Modica Chocolate, prepared according to the ancient Aztec recipe, a unique culinary experience.

Scicli, considered a hidden gem, fascinates with its noble palaces and alleys made famous by the Montalbano’s fiction.

Ragusa Ibla, the historic heart of the city of Ragusa, is a labyrinth of streets, squares and stairways that tell centuries of Sicilian art and daily life. Prominent is the majestic Cathedral of San Giorgio, an authentic symbol of Sicilian Baroque.

Ispica offers an intimate and authentic atmosphere, with splendid Baroque basilicas such as Santa Maria Maggiore, which welcomes visitors with its characteristic Loggiato del Sinatra. The historic center is enriched by elegant Baroque-style civic buildings, which complete the charm of this city rich in history and culture.

Alongside these Baroque masterpieces, it is also worth visiting Marzamemi, an ancient fishing village that retains a fascinating authenticity. Its small squares by the sea, historic tuna fishery and atmosphere suspended in time make it a perfect stop for those who want to combine architectural beauty with Sicilian fishing traditions.

Finally, deserving of special mention is the city of Syracuse, not exactly Baroque but an absolute must for anyone visiting southeastern Sicily. Between the classic charm of the island of Ortigia and the Greek vestiges of the Neapolis Archaeological Park, Syracuse offers a unique cultural experience. In spring, the celebrated Festival of Greek Tragedies at Greek Theater brings the great classics of ancient theater back to life in an evocative and historically charged setting.
